giant leaps

Purdue University has received two $1 million grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture. One grant is part of a $10 million project led by Michigan State University to develop resilient food systems in disaster situations. Purdue’s Maria Marshall, Jim and Lois Ackerman professor of agricultural economics, leads the Extension portion of that project. The second grant is part of a $10 million project led by Clemson University to develop a controlled-environment agriculture facility that cultivates salt-tolerant food crops using saline irrigation water. Rama Radhakrishna, professor and head of the Department of Agricultural Sciences Education and Communication, heads the education program development and evaluation portions of that project.

$1.0 million grants
$2.5 million grant

A team of Purdue scientists led by Shihuan Kuang, professor of animal sciences, has received a grant from the National Institutes of Health to define the role of lipid droplets in muscle stem cell function. The team will explore animal growth to enhance meat production, quality and taste, as well as the human implications for muscle-related disease, aging and injury.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has awarded a $10 million grant to Purdue and its project partners to help improve management of 15 million acres of privately owned forests in the Eastern U.S. Purdue will provide the digital tools that facilitate precision management for forest health, under the direction of Songlin Fei, professor of forestry and natural resources and the Dean’s Chair of Remote Sensing.
