The inside scoop on Purdue’s new ice cream

What’s international about ice cream, you ask? Variations of the sweet treat are loved around the world, so we can’t resist sharing Purdue’s new ice cream flavor, Boiler Chips. Developed at the request of Purdue President Mung Chiang by Purdue’s Food Entrepreneurship Manufacturing Institute (FEMI) and led by FEMI students, the new flavor and its packaging design are out of this world.

FEMI provides services to help entrepreneurs get their products onto shelves and to address industry challenges. Students are essential to FEMI’s operations, so they brainstormed several new flavors, including ingredient formulations. After President Chiang’s team narrowed the flavors down to two choices, incoming students tasted both during Boiler Gold Rush, voting for their favorite as well as a name. The winner: caramel ice cream with chocolate chips, dubbed Boiler Chips.

Glovers Ice Cream in Frankfort, Indiana, which has produced Purdue ice cream flavors since the Purdue Creamery closed, is now producing Boiler Chips and the Purdue vanilla flavor, renamed One Giant Scoop. The hand-filled, single-serving containers with a galactic theme were served at a Purdue football game in September 2023 and will be available at the Purdue Memorial Union Market and the Boilermaker Butcher Block.
