Professor Preckel researches and teaches in the areas of decision analysis and mathematical modeling. He has had extensive experience in developing applications and methods over a wide range of subject matter areas. His current areas of interest are focused on: energy modeling, assessment of the effects of policy across an economy's income spectrum, supply chain management, modeling imperfectly competitive markets, and methods and applications for optimization and numerical integration. He became the Faculty Director of Indiana’s State Utility Forecasting Group in February 2007.

Professor Preckel's recent publications include: “Risk-Adjusted Efficiency and Risk Aversion in the Agricultural Banking Industry,” Agricultural Finance Review, 2009;  “Optimal Control of Desensitizing Inputs: The Case of Paylean,” American Journal of Agricultural Economics, 2010; “A Modified, Implicit, Directly Additive Demand System,” Applied Economics, 2010;  “Planning India’s Long-term Energy Shipment Infrastructures for Electricity and Coal,” Energy Policy, 2010; “The Economics of Integrated Insect Management in Stored Corn,” Economic Entomology, 2010; “Predicting Within Country Household Food Expenditure Variation Using International Cross-Section Estimates,” Economics Letters, 2010; and  “Information Sharing across Multiple Buyers in a Supply Chain,” Asia Pacific Journal of Operations Research, 2011.  He has served as a consultant to Control Analysis Corporation, Electric Power Research Institute, Hudson Institute, Land O’ Lakes, U.S. Agency for International Development, University of Delaware, the World Bank, Chemonics International and USAID.
