Long term summer study abroad programs vary in length, credits earned and activities. Programs may include classroom study, work/internship or research experience. Programs are six weeks or more with students earning six credits or more.
UNIVERSITY OF SAO PAULO AT PIRASSUNUNGA

Students can choose to study either at the University of Sao Paulo on the Pirassununga campus. Knowledge of Portuguese, the language of Brazil, is not required, but familiarity with it is beneficial. Students will choose an agricultural & food track or a viticulture & enology track. During the weekends, students will visit the Pyrenees mountains, Barcelona and have some free weekends. No prior knowledge of the French language is required. Several other universities participate in this program as well. The second month students will participate in a farm experience/unpaid internship. If students did not want to participate in the internship, they could engage in a two-week study tour. This biochemistry research program provides students with a number of options for a mentored summer research experience at the Heinrich-Heine Universitat Dusseldorf. The research projects emphasize molecular approaches and utilize a wide variety of biological systems, including plants, mammalian tissue cultures, mice, bacteria, fungi, viruses, etc. Each Purdue student is paired with a German graduate student mentor or postdoctoral fellow, who provides one-on-one instruction and supervision. Students are expected to learn enough about the procedures and the biological system to be able to continue to design experiments, analyze data, and prepare a presentation at the end of the experience. Previous research experience is required.

GREECE - PERROTIS COLLEGE - RESEARCH OR INTERNSHIP

The beautiful campus of Perrotis College located in Thessaloniki, Greece is a part of the American Farm School. Perrotis College offers three fields of study; agricultural and environmental science, food science and technology, ag and food business management. Students engage in hands on activities as learning through doing is integrated and practiced through the education system. The campus has grown to 280 acres since its beginning in 1904. Part of the campus is an educational farm including olive trees, poultry, vineyards, greenhouses along with other crops and livestock. Students stay at the residence hall and eat at the dining facility located on campus.
During this six week program in late May until the end of June, students earn 6 credits. A Greek Cultural Experience course is offered to be immersed into the culture. Students are able to choose between a research internship or work internship or wine business intensive course. During the research internship students will work in a laboratory or educational farm/field with a research supervisor. The work internship involves working within the educational farm unit of either dairy, poultry, horticulture or dairy processing laboratory. The wine business course focuses on viticulture in Greece looking at ancient local tradition to modern international industry. A trip to Athens, hiking Mount Olympus, sailing around Halkidiki are excursions offered during this summer program. Other universities involved in this program include Texas A&M, WPI, Lincoln University, Georgia University, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Iowa State University.

Located on the National Taiwan University campus, this two-month program involves research, field excursions and classroom instruction. The first four weeks students will conduct research in an area of interest with a faculty from National Taiwan University. The second month, students will participate in the Biodiversity, Agriculture and Culture of Taiwan (BACT) program. During the BACT program, students will learn about the agriculture, geography, flora and fauna, ecology, and culture of Taiwan. Students will visit several national parks, museums, and forests. Some Chinese is taught during BACT, but no prior language experience is required to participate.
The cost of the program is Summer Tuition, $64 for insurance, $2900 for NTU's program fee, airfare (estimated at $1500), housing and food (estimated at $400) and $15 for a passport.
