John MacDonald passes away

Professor Emeritus, Dr. John F. MacDonald

Dr. John F. MacDonald, Professor Emeritus of Entomology, passed away at home on Monday, December 4th.  He joined the faculty here at Purdue in 1976 and specialized in medical/veterinary entomology, identifying immature insects, and principles of systematics, especially as regards aquatic insects.

John received his BA in Zoology from California State; his MPH from UCLA; and he earned a PhD from Washington State University in Entomology. He was very active in his community doing natural history presentations, and received an Appreciation Award from the Tippecanoe County Board of Health in 2003 for his help with mosquito management programs.

John retired from the department with Emeritus status in 2003, but was frequently seen around Smith Hall – particularly during “off” hours – quietly working or offering help to those who were around.  His family is tentatively planning a memorial service for John in 2018.
