Farmer Sentiment Rebounds, but Future Expectations Continue to Slide

Farmer sentiment improved in February as the Purdue University-CME Group Ag Economy Barometer Index rose from 113 points in January to 116. The Current Conditions Index increased by 11 points, while the Future Expectations Index dropped 1 point. Although concerns about agricultural exports moderated somewhat from the previous month, they are still higher than those expressed in December. In addition, the percentage of respondents who think the U.S. is headed in the “right direction” declined for the second month in a row.

Livestock Sector Optimism Fuels a Modest Rise in Farmer Sentiment in October

There was a modest uptick in U.S. farmer sentiment in October as the Purdue University-CME Group Ag Economy Barometer index of 129 was 3 points higher than September’s reading. The slight rise in the barometer was fueled primarily by an increase in the Index of Current Conditions. Farmer’s appraisal of current conditions on their farms continues to be a tale of two economies – livestock vs crop sectors.

U.S. agricultural producer sentiment changed little in September as the Purdue University-CME Group Ag Economy Barometer reading of 126 was just one point higher than a month earlier. However, there was a shift in producers’ perceptions of current conditions and their expectations for the future.

The Purdue University-CME Group Ag Economy Barometer index declined for the second month in a row. The July index fell 11 points below June’s reading and was fueled by U.S. farmers’ weaker perceptions regarding both current conditions and their expectations for the future.
