The Nature of Teaching: Health & Wellness

This video explains the importance of getting kids active and accessing the outdoors. The Nature of Teaching workshops and online certificates provide K-5 teachers with lesson plans that incorporate health and wellness into standards-based curriculum. This allows for teachers to meet the requirements set for by the state and federal government while keeping kids active and healthy.

Are there health benefits connecting children back with nature? Meet these teachers who share their stories of how nature activities have improved student's knowledge and conception of what the outdoors can bring, physically and mentally. Students enjoy the opportunity for an outdoor activity and upon returning to the classroom, participation and attitudes are at their best. This unit provides introductory lesson plans that allow students to explore nature and understand the health benefits of being outside. Lesson One introduces the term habitat and explains to the students that habitat is made up of four components that animals need to survive and reproduce. Lesson 3: Hiking for a Healthy Heart Sneak Peek

This unit provides introductory lesson plans that allow students to explore nature and understand the health benefits of being outside. Lesson 1: Tree Life Cycle Sneak Peek

Youth will enjoy the outdoor activities in this curriculum titled "Trees of the Midwest" which has three lessons and will teach students all about trees, including the life cycle of a tree, the function of different parts of a tree, and the use for and value of different wood products. Lesson 2: Tree ID Sneak Peek

A fun way to encourage youth in receiving exercise and being outdoors is identifying trees. This curriculum titled "Trees of the Midwest" has three lessons and will teach students all about trees, including the life cycle of a tree, the function of different parts of a tree, and the use for and value of different wood products.
