Sander Safety and Operation

Rules and guidelines listed on this page are only reminders. Persons must read lab safety manual, machine manual, and be trained by WRL Manager.

Safety Rules

  • Safety glasses are required. Dust mask advised.
  • Don’t wear loose clothing or gloves, keep long hair tied back.
  • Never adjust sander or setup while sander is running.
  • Never remove guard unless authorized by Technician or WRL Manager
  • Setups requiring anything other than the standard sander equipment must be approved by supervisor.
  • Sandpaper changes must be approved by Technician or WRL Manager.
  • Be aware of feed direction.
  • Sanding end grain or curved pieces that go in and out of end grain is dangerous. Kickback may occur. Consult supervisor before performing this operation.
  • Sanding burns hurt! Keep fingers a safe distance from sandpaper.
  • Sanders will throw pieces if operated improperly. Be aware of what you are doing.
  • Always sand on downward turning side of sanding disc.
  • Don’t sand material that is too small to be held or supported properly.
  • If machine is malfunctioning stop immediately and report to supervisor.

 

Operation

  • Put on your safety glasses and dust mask.
  • Check the sandpaper for tears and make sure it is not loose.
  • Open blast gate and turn dust collection on.
  • Turn sander on.
  • Hold piece firmly against table or stop.
  • Avoid excessive pressure against sand paper.
  • Avoid awkward hand positions that may cause hands to slip into paper.
  • The disc sander is recommended for outside curves and angles.
  • The sander is not recommended for joinery or squaring stock.
  • Support large stock as necessary.
  • After completing work clean sander and area around it.
  • Tear down all setups made. Setups may be left with approval of supervisor.
