Wide Belt Sander Safety and Operation

Rules and guidelines listed on this page are only reminders. Persons must read lab safety manual, machine manual, and be trained by WRL Manager.

The wide belt sander is a precise, powerful and expensive piece of machinery. Each use must be approved by supervisor.

Safety Glasses

Safety Rules

  • Safety glasses are required.
  • Don’t wear loose clothing or gloves, keep long hair tied back.
  • Never remove guards unless authorized by WRL Manager.
  • Don’t place hands or fingers under pieces during feeding to avoid potential pinch hazard.
  • Don’t let hands come too close to top of opening on sander. This is also a pinch hazard.
  • Setups requiring anything other than the standard sander equipment must be approved by supervisor.
  • Sandpaper changes must be approved by Technician or WRL Manager.
  • Machine must be locked out for all adjustments other than table height.
  • Avoid kick out. Stand to the side of the belt.
  • Sanders will throw pieces if operated improperly. Be aware of what you are doing.
  • Don’t sand anything that contains metal.
  • If machine is malfunctioning stop immediately and report to supervisor.

 

Operation

To Start

  1. Put on your safety glasses.
  2. Turn on air compressor and allow line pressure to reach 90 psi.
  3. Change belt if necessary.
  4. Apply tension to the belt.
  5. Open blast gate and turn dust collection on.
  6. Set thickness.
    • Consult removal diagram and supervisor for this setting.
  7. Turn on switches in following order:
    1. MAIN SWITCH ON
    2. CONTROLS ON
    3. MASTER START
    4. STOP HEAD/ RESET BRAKE
    5. START HEAD
    6. START FEED
  8. Place piece onto feed belt so that it goes through the sander with the grain.
  • E stop is used for emergencies and malfunctions. After any E stop, press STOP HEAD/ RESET BRAKE before restarting.
  • Keep motor load at or below 50%. To keep below this limit, slow conveyor feed rate or increase the thickness the table is set on.
  • Consult manual for further tips and information.

To Shut Down

  1. Press STOP HEAD/ RESET BRAKE.
  2. Press STOP FEED.
  3. Wait for machine to stop.
  4. Switch CONTROLS OFF.
  5. Turn MAIN POWER off.
  6. Blow dust out of and off the machine.
  7. Turn off dust collection.
  8. Turn belt tension off.
  9. Turn off air compressor.
