I was the first in my family to attend college, earning a scholarship to Michigan State University. It was a very affordable option, and I worked summers on the Cooperative Soil Survey of Michigan. I felt comfortable in school, surrounded by 36,000 other Spartans, though not everyone from rural Michigan was as fortunate.
