nres research

NRES students are required to either complete an internship or a research experience before graduation.  Several of our students choose to participate in research either on or off campus.

If our office is ever aware of any open research opportunities, we will post them on our job board.

We encourage our students to view our Affiliated Faculty section to learn more about the research projects that our Affiliated Faculty partake in. Faculty members welcome interested students to email them and ask if they need assistance with their research.  Click here for a guide that can help you write that email.

Students can also look at these websites for research opportunities at Purdue University:

Below are examples of what research projects our students have completed.

Grace Collins' Summer Assistantship in Amphibian Disease Ecology

This summer, Grace completed an Assistantship in Amphibian Disease Ecology at the University of Notre Dame’s Rohr Lab. Under the mentorship of PhD student Gracie Hedgpeth, she worked on a project to test a fungal metabolite vaccine's effectiveness against a disease in Indiana gray treefrogs. This research was part of a broader effort to combat the global amphibian biodiversity crisis caused by infectious diseases. Through this experience, Grace gained valuable skills in animal care, wet lab techniques, and wildlife disease research.

Matteo Mereu Summer Research Internship at Argonne National Laboratory

This summer,  Matteo Mereu completed a 10-week Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) at Argonne National Laboratory. Under the guidance of mentors like Troy Hawkins, Tai-Yuan Huang, and Doris Oke, he gained valuable experience in the Energy Systems and Infrastructure Analysis division.

Beyond the technical skills, Matteo formed lasting connections with fellow interns and contributed to meaningful projects focused on a greener future. Matteo researched the decarbonization and sustainability of fuels use in the United States, which has set the stage for his continued academic and professional growth.

Alexus Arvin and Tucker Ensmenger with the Purdue Hydrologic Impacts Group

NRES Students Alexus Arvin and Tucker Ensmenger spent their Summer 2024 helping former NRES Director Dr. Bowling and current NRES Interim Director Dr. Cherkauer with their research associated with the Purdue Hydrologic Impacts Group.  Specifically, they worked on finding ways to use recycled drainage water for fertigation; fertigation is a technique for delivering fertilizer to crops.  You can learn more about their research here.
