From Scottish Farms to the Highlands: A Purdue Ag Alumni Journey Through Scotland

June 20–27, 2027

Imagine standing ringside at Scotland’s premier agricultural event, watching some of the country’s finest livestock compete, then a few days later walking through a working berry farm learning how Scottish growers manage production, labor and marketing. Visit a historic estate where Aberdeen Angus and Highland cattle graze alongside Scottish Blackface sheep. Meet an Angus breeder and explore the influence of Scottish genetics around the world. And in between, experience castles, whisky, legendary golf, charming villages and the breathtaking landscapes of the Scottish Highlands.

This Purdue Ag Alumni Scotland Agriculture, Royal Highland Show & Cultural Tour brings together the very best of Scottish agriculture, rural life and culture for an unforgettable eight-day experience.

The journey begins at the Royal Highland Show, Scotland's premier agricultural showcase. Spend a full day immersed in the sights and sounds of Scottish agriculture—from livestock competitions and equestrian events to farm machinery, agricultural exhibits, educational demonstrations and an incredible selection of local foods. For anyone with a passion for agriculture, it is an extraordinary opportunity to see how farming is celebrated and practiced on the other side of the Atlantic.

From there, the experience moves beyond the showgrounds and into the countryside. Travel through Perthshire to Blair Castle, home of the Atholl family for more than 700 years, and visit its working farm to see Commercial Suckler Cows, Pedigree Aberdeen Angus, Highland Cattle and Scottish Blackface Sheep. At Dewar's Aberfeldy Distillery, discover the history and craftsmanship behind Scotch whisky and experience one of Scotland's most iconic agricultural products.

The trip also offers an authentic look at modern Scottish agriculture. Visit a working berry farm to learn firsthand about fruit production, harvesting, labor, marketing and contemporary farming practices. Later, spend time on an Angus cattle farm, exploring the history of the breed, breeding programs and herd management—and learning about the remarkable global impact of Scottish Angus genetics.

And agriculture is only part of the story.

Explore Edinburgh, including the Royal Mile, Old Town, Georgian New Town and magnificent Edinburgh Castle. Travel through the dramatic Highlands and along Loch Ness and the Great Glen. Discover historic Stirling Castle and cruise the spectacular waters of Loch Lomond. Spend time in St. Andrews, the legendary home of golf, and enjoy the charm of Scottish villages and countryside along the way.

Throughout the journey, there is a thoughtful balance between organized agricultural experiences and time to explore on your own. Enjoy local meals, discover Scottish shops and pubs, wander historic streets, take in the scenery—or simply slow down and enjoy the company of fellow agriculture alumni.
