Evaluating tree compatible ground cover mixes to promote establishment of mine reclamation tree plantings

The identification of tree compatible ground covers that effectively control erosion following mining and during reclamation, yet simultaneously allow for establishment of planted trees is a critical need to improve mine reclamation success. Our major objective is to better understand how different herbaceous ground cover seed mixes, in combination with vegetation control for release, affects the establishment success of four hardwood species on reclaimed coal mines. This objective will be accomplished by conducting a three-year field experiment on a newly reclaimed site in southern Indiana. This research will substantially increase our reclamation knowledge base by providing the most current and reliable comparison among ground cover seed mixes.
