Why do we grow algae?

The added value of algae

Why do we cultivate algae in our aquaponics system? The answer is simple: we aim to enhance the value of our system. The algae contain valuable materials such as phenolic compounds, lipids, and proteins, which can be utilized in dietary supplements, cosmetics, and even food products. In addition to these value-added products, algae play a crucial role in filtering excess nutrients from our aquaponics water.

Our algae growth unit utilizes wastewater discharged from the aquaponics system. Although aquaponics systems recirculate water through plants and fish, they still require regular water discharge to prevent the accumulation of excess nutrients and toxic compounds. This discharge is rich in nitrogen and phosphorus, which the algae use for growth.

When the algae are ready for harvest, we separate the algal biomass from the water. The resulting water is now free of excess nutrients and can be reintroduced into the aquaponics system. The harvested algae is then processed into valuable products.
