Governor's Summer Intern - IDEM - Watershed Planning and Restoration

Compensation: The hourly rate for this position is $16.24 for those that do not hold a bachelor’s degree & $17.24 for those that hold a bachelor’s degree or higher by the time the internship starts.
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management is seeking a Water Quality Intern to join our agency in summer 2026. The intern will support a variety of projects including, but not limited to, watershed management, water quality analysis/modeling, nonpoint source pollution control efforts, water policy, water quality monitoring, and more. This is a great opportunity for anyone interested in pursuing a career in the environmental or natural resources fields with a focus on water. IDEM issues air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Several of the major components within IDEM include inspecting and monitoring regulated entities, providing compliance and technical assistance, monitoring and assessing air, land, and water quality and more.
Responsibilities:
- Support water quality improvement efforts across the state through Indiana’s Nonpoint Source and Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) programs
- Research and summarize water quality and water policy topics
- Assist with report preparation, data collection, and analysis/modeling for ongoing efforts on rivers, streams, and lakes
- Assist in other activities such as field monitoring, environmental reporting, biological community evaluations, etc. based on agency needs and/or specific interests of the intern
