Our mission is to implement federal and state regulations to protect human health and the environment while allowing the environmentally sound operations of industrial, agricultural, commercial, and governmental activities vital to a prosperous economy.  We issue air, water, and solid and hazardous waste permits that restrict discharges to environmentally safe levels. Staff members inspect and monitor regulated entities; provide compliance and technical assistance; monitor and assess air, land, and water quality; use enforcement actions as necessary to ensure compliance; and respond to incidents involving spills to soil or waters of the state.

Role Overview

This technical position is essential to ensure national ambient air quality standards are protected and provide air quality forecasts to protect public health throughout Indiana. Candidates should be able to work within a team environment but also work independently as necessary. This position requires specialized training in air dispersion modeling software and state and federal policies and guidance which is provided by the state.

  • Perform air quality dispersion modeling to assess the impacts of new or modified sources for New Source Review/Prevention of Significant Deterioration purposes to ensure that national ambient air quality standards are not exceeded. 
  • Describe modeling results in a technical support document.
  • Be able to present modeling results to supervisors, companies and the public occasionally. 
  • Provide responses to public comments and give legal depositions and testimony in any permit appeals process as necessary.
  • Conduct air quality forecasting and provide daily air quality forecasts throughout the state to help increase public awareness of possible air quality issues.
  • Assist in the creation of meteorological files annually to update the meteorological database for use in air dispersion modeling, this may include working with National Weather Service and onsite surface and upper air data.
  • Perform data analyses for special projects; proficient in Word and Excel with Access, R database management and various other related software programs and tools preferred but not required.
  • Represent IDEM in state, regional and national committees and workgroups as well as participate in meetings with the public, companies, consultants and other external customers
  • Work skills needed for this position include analyzing technical information, critical thinking, working effectively within a team environment, serving internal and external customers, communication and organization.
  • Occasional in-state or out-of-state travel for meetings/training (1 - 2 times a year) and periodic weekend air quality forecasting from home (1-3 hours total per weekend / 4-6 weekends a year) may be required.
  • This position requires a valid IN driver's license.

Salary Statement

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $53,222.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.

Requirements:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:  

  • a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Policy, Chemistry, Biology, Geology, Public Health or a related field. 
  • at least two (2) years of experience in an environmental or environmental public health field. 

Related certifications and coursework may be considered for education or experience.

  • Broad knowledge of theories, environmental protection principles and practices, specialty area, and program area. 
  • Thorough knowledge of chemistry, biology, hydrology, mathematics, engineering, and other environmental sciences as they relate to program area. 
  • Thorough knowledge of soil, water, air sampling, laboratory analysis and interpretation as it relates to program area. 
  • Ability to conduct surveys, inspections and investigations of facilities and sites, review projects/situations, read plans, interpret findings, and make recommendations. 
  • Ability to prepare documents for administrative and regulatory action. 
  • Excellent research and writing skills for preparing accurate, precise, clear, and thorough reports. 
  • Ability to effectively interact and orally communicate with parties with diverse levels of environmental expertise particularly for purposes of meetings, hearings, and negotiating critically sensitive issues. 
  • Ability to interpret and apply legal terminology and practices, and the ability to apply these in a variety of conditions and situations. 
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
