About the Internship
Phipps is offering a 16-week, full-time (40 hours/week) internship from mid-May to mid-September for individuals interested in ecological research in urban landscapes. This opportunity is ideal for those who have completed undergraduate studies or are currently enrolled in a graduate-level program. Interns will work closely with Phipps’ Plant Ecologist and educators, gaining hands-on experience in ecological research and community engagement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct field research on soil and plant biodiversity in urban green spaces, including meadows, lawns, and forests.
  • Assist with plant identification using dichotomous keys and regional references (e.g., The Plants of Pennsylvania, Wildflowers in the Field and Forest).
  • Collect, enter, and analyze ecological data in Excel; experience with statistical software R is a plus.
  • Survey urban and suburban parks such as South Park, North Park, Boyce Park, Schenley Park, and Frick Park.
  • Engage with public and professional groups on sustainable land care management and biodiversity conservation.
Qualifications
  • Coursework or experience in plant science, botany, ecology, or related fields.
  • Strong plant identification skills and familiarity with regional flora and fauna.
  • Proficiency in Excel for data management; knowledge of R is preferred but not required.
  • Comfortable working outdoors for extended periods in various weather conditions.
  • Strong communication skills for outreach efforts.
  • Access to a reliable mode of transportation is preferred but not required (carpooling options are available).
