Watercraft Inspection Steward/Environmental Educator (20 positions)
Mission:
In partnership with SUNY ESF and NYS Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, the program prevents the spread of aquatic invasive species (AIS) through voluntary watercraft inspections and outreach at boat launches.
Appointment Details:
- Duration: Summer seasonal (May–September, up to 4 months)
- Hours: Full-time (40 hours/week, Friday–Monday, 8:00 AM–6:30 PM; weekends and holidays required; weather-dependent with make-up opportunities)
- Compensation: $18.54 per hour (no benefits)
- Niagara (Buffalo Harbor, Fort Niagara, Wilson Tuscarora, Big Six Mile Creek), Genesee (Silver Lake, Braddock Bay, Oak Orchard), Finger Lakes (multiple sites including Cayuga Lake and Conesus Lake), Thousand Islands, and Central (Pine Grove, Mexico Point).
- Note: Stewards must live within commuting distance and have reliable transportation (no provided housing or transport).
- Inspect watercraft, remove and dispose of aquatic plants
- Educate the public and distribute literature
- Set up outreach tables and collect data using digital tablets
- Participate in removal projects, trainings, and mandatory training (May 16–18 at Green Lakes State Park)
- Operate decontamination stations at select locations (training provided)
- Degree (or in progress) in natural resources, biology, environmental studies, recreation, or education
- Strong communication skills and ability to work independently outdoors in various weather
- Must have reliable transportation
