Botany & Plant Pathology
Scott McAdam
First-Generation College Student Experience:
I am a first-generation college student, coming from a family of dairy farmers. I was the first in my family to attend university. Initially, I pursued a degree in chemistry, but I accidentally discovered my passion for botany and switched majors to study plant adaptation to the environment and evolution. Conducting research in a plant physiology lab during my undergraduate years was a transformative experience that inspired me to attend graduate school and commit to a lifelong career in science.
Courses Currently Instructed:
- BNTY 120: Principles of Plant Biology I
Career and Concentration Guidance:
- Environmental Quality and Restoration
Career Interests:
- Restoration Ecology
- Plant Adaptations to Climate
- Plant Biodiversity
- Plant Physiology
- Graduate Studies in Plant Sciences
Research Interests:
I am interested in understanding how plants respond to their environment, particularly in relation to drought and water limitation. My research focuses on how adaptations that allow plants to thrive in dry environments have evolved.
Research Opportunities:
I typically hire students as hourly employees. Students involved in my projects will engage in independent research on the water relations of plants. They will design and conduct their own experiments under the supervision of myself and graduate students in the lab.
