Mitch has a strong interest in fish biology, fisheries science and marine biology. He contributes to teaching and extension programs at Purdue University and the Illinois Indiana Sea Grant. Mitch teaches FNR 201 (Marine Biology) in the fall semester. He also guest lectures in various fish biology, fish ecology and fisheries management courses. Mitch is the academic advisor for the Purdue student chapter of the American Fisheries Society and also advises undergraduate and graduate students in the Fish Ecology Lab.
Mitch has two signature extension programs: 1) Connecting anglers, scientists and managers in Great Lakes fisheries, and 2) Assisting with private landowners in Indiana with pond management. To deliver these programs, Mitch hosts workshops, publishes information booklets, develops websites and works directly with anglers, landowners and other stakeholders.
Mitch has also had extensive research experience in fisheries science. He has conducted research on fish recruitment and spawning habitat in the Great Lakes. He has also examined the biology and ecology of pelagic fish species such as wahoo, mackerel and tunas, and estuarine species such as blue threadfin. Mitch has conducted socioeconomic research on anglers in marine and freshwater fisheries. He was worked for state and federal fishery management organizations in Australia.
Mitch obtained a Bachelor of Science (Honors) majoring in Tropical Marine Science in 2006 and a Ph.D. in Fisheries Science in 2013, both from the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. Mitch started at Purdue in August 2014 as a postdoctoral research associate, transitioned to a fisheries scientist position in August 2016 and started as a Clinical Assistant Professor in August 2017.
