M.S. Research Position:
Tree Physiology, Disease Ecology, and Forest Resilience
Employer: Purdue University – Couture Lab
Department: Forestry and Natural Resources
Position Overview
The Couture Lab at Purdue University is seeking a motivated graduate student for a Master of Science (M.S.) research position focused on tree physiology, disease ecology, and forest resilience.
The selected student will investigate how forest trees balance resource allocation among growth, drought tolerance, and pathogen resistance, with a focus on black walnut (Juglans nigra).
This research will explore how investments in tree growth may affect drought tolerance and disease resistance, as well as whether observable tree characteristics can reliably predict family-level genetic variation. Findings will contribute to tree improvement, forest health, and sustainable forest management practices.
Research Responsibilities
The selected graduate student will participate in research activities including:
-
Investigating physiological and ecological tradeoffs affecting tree growth, drought tolerance, and pathogen resistance.
-
Conducting field and laboratory research involving black walnut trees.
-
Assisting with experimental design, data collection, and statistical analysis.
-
Studying plant-pathogen interactions and forest responses to environmental stress.
-
Collaborating with researchers at Purdue University, the USDA Forest Service, and the Hardwood Tree Improvement and Regeneration Center (HTIRC).
-
Preparing scientific reports, presenting research findings, and contributing to scientific publications.
Training and Professional Development
This position offers opportunities to develop skills in:
-
Forest ecophysiology and plant-pathogen interactions.
-
Experimental design and ecological field research.
-
Laboratory techniques and statistical data analysis.
-
Tree improvement and forest resilience research.
-
Scientific writing, research presentations, and professional collaboration.
Minimum Qualifications
-
Bachelor's degree in Forestry, Natural Resources, Ecology, Plant Biology, Entomology, Environmental Science, Plant Pathology, or a related field.
-
Strong interest in forest ecology, plant physiology, or tree improvement.
-
Demonstrated quantitative and analytical skills.
-
Excellent written and oral communication skills.
-
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in field and laboratory settings.
Preferred Qualifications
-
Previous experience in plant or tree physiology, forestry, or ecological field research.
-
Familiarity with statistical analysis.
-
Interest in climate adaptation, forest health, or restoration ecology.
-
Interest in pursuing a career in forest ecology, conservation, tree improvement, or natural resource management.
Application Information
Preference will be given to applicants who apply to Purdue University's Department of Forestry and Natural Resources graduate program before December 15, 2026, and are competitive for departmental support.
