Key insights include:
- A majority of consumers mistakenly interpret “Best if Used by” and “Use-by” labels as an indicator of food safety.
- Consumers perceive moderate risk of foodborne illness from both food at home (FAH) and food away from home (FAFH).
- Most consumers perceive a high risk of foodborne bacteria contamination from raw meats.
- Most consumers do not perceive a high risk of foodborne bacteria contamination from leafy greens, raw fruits and vegetables, and milk, even though these foods are among the leading causes of E. coli and Salmonella illness.
- Incidence of food insecurity dropped slightly, in November, to 12.6% – also the fifth consecutive month below 14%.
