Internship Posting: Meigs-Purdue Ag Center

 

This is a unique experience working for Purdue University at the Meigs Horticultural Facility (Meigs) part of Throckmorton Purdue Ag Center. Meigs houses between 30-50 diverse research projects encompassing irrigated annual production, certified organic land, high tunnels, fruit trees, a vineyard, timber, and 2 active man-made wetlands. Field research includes: fruit and vegetable crops, entomology studies, weed science, ornamental production, forestry, and much more. In addition to the key responsibilities listed below, interns will have the opportunity to tailor their educational experience. Purview of the position can include integrated pest
management, farm systems management, research plot layout, horticulture, agronomy, invasives management, plant pathology, and weed science. We are looking for someone who is dependable and has an attention to detail.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assisting staff, faculty, and graduate students with crop maintenance tasks including but not limited to: pest and disease scouting, planting, weeding, mowing, raised bed making, irrigation installation and maintenance, transplanting, and plot harvest
  • General maintenance and repairs on high tunnels, fences, hoses, etc.
  • Maintain a clean and organized working area in the farm shop
  • Must be willing to work in teams and independently throughout the summer 
  • Exhibit the ability to effectively communicate with the ag center team, faculty and university students

Qualifications

  • Willingness and ability to work outdoors, in full sun, and on-farm conditions
  • Must be confident with driving utility vehicles
  • Understanding of current farming practices is a benefit but not required
  • Ability to operate tractors is a benefit but not required
  • Must provide your own transportation to and from work

Additional Notes

Meigs is located at 9101 S 100 E, Lafayette, IN 47909. This is roughly 15 minutes from Purdue University’s main campus in West Lafayette. Housing is not provided. Interns will be expected to work 40 hours per week, Monday- Friday from 8am to 5pm. Start and end dates can be flexible. Entomology, HLA students encouraged to apply.
