Bloomington GIS Internship

The City of Bloomington, Indiana ITS Department is looking for talented students to join our Geospatial Data
Science Internship program. This program is designed to build career-ready skills by pairing hands-on GIS
technical work with the project management, documentation, and communication experience employers look for, giving students real municipal project experience alongside their coursework.
Through this program, interns will have opportunities to:
- Develop technical proficiencies in using ESRI GIS software.
- Gain practical experience with GIS techniques for creating, editing, and analyzing data.
- Produce professional output from spatial data including maps and reports
- Practice project life-cycle management skills
- Collaborate with GIS and other professionals
Program Details
Interns work directly with the GIS Manager and GIS Specialists on real projects across the full life cycle — from GPS field data collection and data maintenance, to automation development and schema design.
Typical work includes reviewing and maintaining GIS data, creating new datasets, producing maps and reports, and researching GIS best practices. Interns also attend regular GIS team meetings, gaining exposure to how a full-service city government operates.
Technical work is completed using the ESRI ArcGIS suite, with an emphasis on strong data quality, clear
documentation, and creative problem solving. Coaching and feedback from City GIS staff are built into every
assignment.
Who We're Looking For
Students enrolled in an accredited college or university, ideally studying Geography, GIS, Remote Sensing,
Environmental Studies, Engineering, Data Science, Informatics, or a related field. Working knowledge of ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, or AutoCAD is preferred, along with strong communication skills and attention to detail.
City of Bloomington ITS GIS staff are responsible for the development and maintenance of the City’s central
enterprise geodatabase, creating and updating datasets, producing cartographic maps, providing data analysis, and developing web mapping services and applications to support operations of City Departments, Boards and Commissions. This is an unpaid internship based in person at the ITS Department office in Bloomington, Indiana, offered every semester. Interns are expected to be available 5 to 29 hours per week, scheduled between 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday to Friday. Field work is required; a valid driver's license is preferred.
