Landscape Construction Foreman – Masonry

Location: Naperville, IL
Position Type: Seasonal, Full-time (April through November with potential winter work for snow management)
Compensation: $23.50 - $30.00 per hour depending on experience

The Landscape Construction Foreman – Masonry leads a crew through the full installation of hardscape and planting projects, from site layout and grading to final walk-through. The ideal candidate is an experienced mason and hardscape installer who can read plans, establish and hold elevations, build proper base, and set pavers, walls, and steps to a finished standard. This role combines hands-on craftsmanship with crew leadership, and requires physical labor in various outdoor conditions along with a strong commitment to safety, organization, and teamwork.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Masonry and Hardscape Responsibilities

  • Lay out hardscape projects from plans, including staking, string lines, and control points.
  • Establish and verify elevations, slopes, and drainage for patios, walks, and drives.
  • Excavate, install, and compact base material to specified depth and tolerance.
  • Set and cut pavers, natural stone, and slabs, including borders, banding, and inlays.Build segmental retaining walls, seat walls, columns, and freestanding walls to spec.
  • Construct steps, stoops, landings, and stone treads with consistent riser and tread dimensions.
  • Perform mortared masonry work, including brick, block, and natural stone veneer.
  • Install outdoor living features such as fire pits, outdoor kitchens, and pillars.
  • Set edge restraint, joint sand, and sealer; complete punch-list and finish detailing.
  • Operate skid steers, mini excavators, plate compactors, saws, and related equipment safely.

Foreman Responsibilities

  • Lead, train, and direct a crew to meet daily production goals and quality standards.
  • Review plans and job packets, and confirm materials and quantities before mobilizing.
  • Load and transport materials, equipment, and tools to and from job sites.
  • Maintain equipment and supplies assigned to the crew; fuel and check vital fluids daily.
  • Track hours, materials, and job progress, and communicate site issues to the Project Manager.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe job site and professional client interactions.
  • Support snow and ice removal operations (salts, spreaders, plows, shoveling).

Planting and Grading Responsibilities

  • Perform finish grading and shape beds, berms, and lawn areas to plan and drainage requirements.
  • Install trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals per plan, spacing, and horticultural best practices.
  • Verify plant material for quality, size, and proper placement before installation.
  • Amend soil, install mulch, edging, drainage, and irrigation sleeving as required.
  • Install sod and seed, and complete site restoration and clean-up.
  • Water new installations and advise clients on establishment care.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Proven experience in landscape construction with a strong masonry and hardscape background.
  • Demonstrated install knowledge: base preparation, compaction, elevations, drainage, and layout.
  • Experience setting pavers, retaining walls, steps, and natural stone.
  • Experience with planting installation and finish grading.
  • Ability to read and interpret landscape plans, grading plans, and construction details.
  • Knowledge of horticulture, hardscape materials, and recycling programs.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment, skid steers, and towing trailers.
  • Strong focus on safety and maintaining a safe work environment.
  • Excellent organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and lead a team.
  • Bilingual abilities are a plus.
  • Must enjoy working outdoors in various weather conditions.
  • Reliable transportation to/from work (commute expenses not provided).

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit or stand for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to stoop, squat, kneel, bend, twist, and lift heavy objects.
  • Ability to repeatedly lift and place pavers, block, and stone.
  • Must be able to work in inclement weather.
