Aquaponic Farms - When Blue is Green Seminar Series
The Department of Food Science invites Dr. Andrea Liceaga, a professor of Food Science at Purdue University, to present in their When Blue Is Green Seminar Series to discuss "Aquaponic farms as a source of bioactive peptides with nutricosmetic applications. This seminar will be taking place on Tuesday, November 18th at 10:30 AM in NLSN 2187.
Overview:
The use of food-derived peptides in nutricosmetics has gained attention as they can inhibit ageing-related enzymes and protect against oxidative stress conditions. This presentation will provide an overview on the use of food bioactive peptides in nutricosmetic (anti-aging) applications based on chemical, cellular, in silico, and in vivo methods. In addition, it will highlight how aquaponic farms growing plants, microalgae, and fish can be a good source of these multifunctional peptides.
Background:
Dr. Liceaga studies traditional and emerging proteins (e.g., fish, insects, hemp, chia, microalgae) with potential biological activity for therapeutic applications known as "foods for health". Her research also looks at their allergenicity and uses in food formulation towards advancing food security. Dr. Liceaga's research on biological active peptides from traditional and emerging protein sources has generated new knowledge on the development, characterization, and potential application of food peptides as novel ingredients for the food and pharmaceutical industries.
