Tree and log quality, scaling, and measurement – Hardwood University

The Indiana Hardwood Lumbermen’s Association (IHLA) presents the Hardwood University class on tree and log quality, scaling, and measurement. Scale standing trees for diameter, merchantable height, and board footage. Inspect trees for timber quality and discuss impacts on tree/log grades and value. Practice tree grading on selected trees. Fell a tree or two and discuss bucking decisions to maximize the value of each log. Discuss and practice log grading and value impacts. Registration includes a tree measuring stick and a lunch. 10:00 AM –10:30 AM Tree measurement – diameter, height, volume
10:30 AM – 11:00 AM Overview of hardwood tree grading
11:00 AM – 12:00 PM Outdoor practice tree scaling, volume estimation, use of tree stick
12:00 PM – 12:30 PM Lunch
12:30 PM – 1:30 PM Cut down 1-2 trees, discuss best log bucking practices to maximize value
1:30 PM – 2:30 PM Observe, measure, and grade the logs
2:30 PM – 3:30 PM Estimate/calculate the value of standing trees and bucked logs
3:30 PM Conclusion
