Virtual Soils Field Trips
Learning about soils and soil landscapes in the field has always been a part of several of our soil science courses. The coronavirus pandemic changed that as travel to field sites in the close confines of a bus became very risky. In response, we developed virtual or hybrid-virtual experiences to replace some of our in-person soils field trips. We are pleased to share these virtual field trips with anyone who may want to learn about soils and landscapes in West Lafayette and northwestern Indiana.
Tapawingo Park Virtual Field Trip
Tapawingo Park is a small, 20-acre park in West Lafayette, IN on the banks of the Wabash River about a mile east of the Purdue University campus. This virtual field trip was developed for our introductory soil science course.
Celery Bog Nature Area Virtual Field Trip
Celery Bog Nature Area is 195-acre park in West Lafayette about 2.5 miles north of the Purdue University campus. This virtual field trip was developed for our introductory soil science course.
Northern Indiana Soils Field Trip
This virtual field trip follows a 100-mile route from the Purdue University campus north to the southern shore of Lake Michigan. It was developed to replace an all-day in-person field trip for a dual level (undergraduate – graduate level) course titled, Soils and Landscapes. To access this virtual field trip, go to the Soil Explorer website or the Soil Explorer mobile app for iPhone/iPad (Apple App Store) or Android devices (Google Play) and select “Virtual Field Trip” from the Regions list. Zoom in to the south end of the route map to get started.
