Biochemistry Transformational Experiences Fund

Thanks to the generosity of Gilbert L. “Skip” and Amelia “Molly” Opperman, the Biochemistry Transformational Experiences Fund helps students extend their education beyond the classroom through meaningful hands-on learning experiences.

The fund supports undergraduate and graduate student opportunities including:

  • Research experiences
  • Academic competitions
  • Outreach and teaching
  • Professional development
  • Student organization activities
  • Study abroad
  • Unique learning environments and other departmental educational priorities

These experiences are designed to strengthen leadership, critical-thinking, problem-solving and research skills while helping students prepare for life after Purdue.

2025-26 Impact

During the 2025-26 fiscal year, support from the Biochemistry Transformational Experiences Fund helped provide advanced educational and professional-development opportunities for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers.

Supported experiences included participation in national and international scientific conferences, specialized workshops and advanced research training, including Gordon Research Conferences, the AACR Annual Meeting and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory workshops.

These opportunities allowed trainees to present their research, connect with scientists in their fields, explore emerging technologies and methodologies, and strengthen their professional networks.
