FNR Graduate Flowchart - PhD Degree
Assumes eight semester graduation timeline
General Requirements:
- Complete 90 credit hours
- 24 hours of graded course credits (36 if without MS)
- 15 research credit hours
- FNR Graduate Program Coordinator, Advisory Committee, & Department Head as well as the Graduate School must approve coursework via Plan of Study
- Present research at conference/workshop
- Produce extension/outreach deliverable
- Publish journal article(s) (encouraged)
Before Semester 1:
- Establish contact with Faculty Advisor & Graduate Program Coordinator
- Register for Semester 1 courses
- Attend orientation
- Complete trainings & certifications for Purdue & FNR as well as other tasks outlined in Welcome Email
Semester 1:
- GRAD 61200 Responsible Conduct of Research
- FNR 59000 Intro to Teaching in Natural Resources
- FNR 50600 Theory & Application of Natural Resources Extension Programming (if spring)
- Choose Advisory Committee members
Semester 2:
- FNR 50600 Theory & Application of Natural Resources Extension Programming (if spring)
- Meet with Advisory Committee (discuss plan of study)
Semester 3:
- Meet with Advisory Committee
- Proposal and Proposal Evaluation Form Due
- Plan of Study due (myPurdue form)
- Determine Preliminary Exam timeframe
Semester 4 & 5:
- Preliminary Exam
Semester 6 & 7:
- Meet with Advisory Committee
- Submit Draft Dissertation to Advisory Committee
- Determine Dissertation defense timeline
- Email Dissertation/Thesis Office concerning formatting
Semester 8:
- Register CAND 99100 or 99200
- Schedule defense
- Submit Dissertation to Advisory Committee
- Defend Dissertation (final exam)
- Deposit Dissertation
- Complete candidacy tasks

Extended Semesters:
- Funding is provided for three years depending on the funding source.
- Funding may be extended depending on source and if making satisfactory progress toward degree, dependent on approval from the Graduate Program Committee.
- PhD program from admission to completing the final exam cannot be more than eight calendar years. Extensions may be granted by the Dean of the Graduate School.
