Second Year for the Boilermaker Vegetable Season Pass

"My family enjoyed the variety of produce we received each week because it encouraged us to try new recipes and share items with our neighbors. We also enjoyed talking to the farm manager and student farm workers when picking up our weekly bags.” Nathan Shoaf, Urban Agriculture Coordinator, Purdue Extension.

The Purdue Student Farm will provide fresh, student-grown vegetables and herbs to community members for the second year in a row. The Boilermaker Vegetable Season Pass started in 2021 to support the local community and to respond to the challenges with the closure of the student dining halls, the student farm’s primary customers. The Boilermaker Vegetable Season Pass provides students with a chance to learn about direct sales in local agriculture as well as grow and provide fresh vegetables to the local community.

"The Student Farm is humbled by the support we received from the community in 2021. The pandemic forced us to look at other income-generating models for the farm, and we transitioned from selling in bulk to on-campus dining courts to a consumer-supported agricultural (CSA) model.” said Petrus Langenhoven, Horticulture and Hydroponics Crop Specialist in the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture and the Farm’s co-director. “It was uncertain times for us, but in the end, we were overwhelmed with subscription applications. This year, we are expanding the CSA to 100 members. Funding generated from this activity supports farm operations and the education of the next generation of vegetable growers. Our students are grateful and appreciate all the support from the community."
