Understanding USDA Farm Income Forecasts

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) releases a number of reports throughout the year. In this episode, Purdue agricultural economists Todd Kuethe and Brady Brewer discuss the latest September release of the USDA Farm Income Forecast report. Each year, USDA forecasts farm income in February and then releases four additional updates throughout the year as more data becomes available. This Purdue Commercial AgCast episode discusses the accuracy and bias of these forecasts along with how to interpret the adjustments.

Contingency Planning with Cash Flow Shortages

A contingency plan is a course of action designed to help a business determine how to respond to possible future events. Contingency plans are often referred to as “Plan B”. One of the most common contingency plans used by a business, particularly a small business, relates to how to respond to the departure or absence of key personnel. Contingency plans relating to how to respond to changes in projected cash flow are also important. Given the recent increase in input prices for fertilizer and fuel and wide variability in expected prices, it would be prudent for a farm to examine the sensitivity of their cash flow and repayment capacity to changes in crop prices. This article illustrates the use of contingency plans for a case farm in southwest Indiana.

Adoption of Conservation Practices and Farm Goals

This analysis draws on a nationwide survey of 400 producers to explore how priorities like profitability, risk, and sustainability impact the adoption of practices like no-till, cover crops, and crop diversification. Farmers who rank conservation as a top goal are significantly more likely to implement these practices—offering a window into what drives long-term thinking in farm management.

One-third of recently surveyed farmers identified farm transfer as their top goal, but priorities like profit, conservation, debt reduction, and income stability also ranked high. The study reveals that most farms pursue a mix of goals, and understanding the tradeoffs between them can lead to better long-term business decisions. Take time to define your farm’s goals—and use them to shape long-term business decisions.
