Allie Greig

Hometown: Fishers, Indiana

Major: Food Science

Why did you choose Purdue Food Science: My aunt is a Purdue Food Science alumna and introduced me to this career path. I enjoyed how this program gave me the opportunity to combine my creativity with my passion for science and health.

What made your Purdue experience great?: The amazing friends and teachers I was able to form relationships with the past few years.

Favorite Purdue Tradition: Sledding down Slayter Hill

Favorite memory of your time at Purdue: Studying abroad in Spain, specifically visiting an olive oil mill to learn how olive oil is made and to participate in a tasting.

Favorite thing about Purdue Food Science and/or the College of Agriculture: The faculty and staff are extremely kind and willing to help.

Favorite professor: Dr. Senay Simsek

Favorite club/organization: Delta Gamma sorority, where I served as the Director of Art and the Director of Scholarship.

What other activities or organizations did you participate in while at Purdue?: I participated in Food Science Club, Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) Product Development Competitions and Purdue Art Community. I was also a volunteer at Natalie’s Second Chance Dog Shelter.

Favorite Purdue event: The Purdue farmer’s market

Favorite spot on campus: Leaps Coffee Shop in the Union

Favorite social activity: Purdue home basketball games

Places you have been as a Purdue student: I studied abroad in both Valencia, Spain, and Costa Rica. I loved being able to explore the food and agriculture industry from a new perspective. I also had two internships the past two summers - first at Red Gold as a product development intern, and most recently at a flavor company called DairyChem as a research and development intern. These opportunities have given me hands on experience creating my own products and working with a team in the food industry.

Favorite class: Food Ingredient Technology (FS 530) was my favorite class because I really enjoyed learning about the role of items that make up our food and how they impact our health and wellness.

Biggest accomplishment at Purdue: Receiving 11 scholarships for academic merit while attending Purdue

Future plans after graduation: I plan to work in product development as part of a research and development team in either the flavor or food manufacturing industry.

Long term career goals: I hope to continue growing in my career as a product development scientist and potentially return to school for my Masters or become a flavor chemist.

Advice for underclassmen: Ask as many questions as you need to understand something, and don’t be the one to tell yourself "no" to opportunities

Biggest takeaway from your time at Purdue: You are so much more capable then you think you are.
