The John S. Wright Center includes teaching and research laboratories, office space for faculty and students, two greenhouses, two walk-in coolers for storing large plant specimens and a 120-person conference facility. The 17,000-square-foot center is used as a field lab, teaching resource and meeting place for faculty, staff and students in the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources as well as other departments on campus.

It is on the site of Martell Forest, approximately 7.5 miles west of the West Lafayette campus. Built in 2002-2003 at a cost of $4 million, the 17,000 sq. ft. Center is a state-of-the-art facility with teaching and research laboratories, office space for faculty and staff, two greenhouses​, and a conference center. The Center was dedicated and officially opened October 3, 2003.

The Center is named in honor of John Shepard Wright, a member of the Purdue University class of 1892 who, in 1964, provided the Department of Forestry and Natural Resources with a generous endowm​ent for the promotion of forestry in Indiana. Mr. Wright was a botanist, an Eli Lilly executive, and a friend of many forestry leaders in Indiana, particularly Stanley Coulter, Purdue University Professor Daniel DenUyl, and Charles C. Deam, the first state forester of Indiana.

Available audio-visual equipment in the Conference Room includes a slide projector, overhead projector, LCD projector, computer hookup, t-1 line, and PAL 3.0 wireless network. A fully equipped kitchen, adjacent to the Conference Room, has a refrigerator, sink, stove, microwave, and coffeemaker.

Approximate room size is 55' x 44', 2750 sq. ft

Seating Capacity

  • Seminar style - 120 chairs in rows
  • Classroom style - 70 at tables in rows
  • Conference style - 45 at tables in a square
  • Dinner style - 100 at rectangular tables

Rates (full day rate based on 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.):

  • College of Agriculture: $200 full day; $100 half day (5 hours or more)
  • Purdue University: $250 full day; $125 half day (5 hours or more)
  • Student Organizations: $50 full day; $25 half day (5 hours or more)

After 5:00 p.m.:

  • $15/hour added on to the regular hourly rate listed above, must be registered for day event
  • without a day event $50/hour
  • $15/hour/day weekend staffing fee, must be registered for day event

Rates for Conference Room and Classroom:

  • College of Agriculture: $350 full day; $175 half day
  • Purdue University: $400 full day; $200 half day
  • $100 full day; $50 half day

The center is an approved Purdue University venue for alcoholic beverage use. Click on the form to request approval: Request For Service of Alchoholic Beverages. This form must be filed with Aramark at least 30 days in advance of the event.

As with all Purdue University buildings, the John S. Wright Center is a non-smoking facility.

*Customers will be charged the hourly rate plus staffing fee, in addition to the regular room rate, for every hour the facility is used outside the hours of 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
