Learn how Spanish entrepreneur agrifood companies operate and how the properties and processing of food influence product performance. Participants will enjoy Mediterranean Lifestyle as locals do, will see where they work, shop, eat, relax and have fun.  Experience the most interesting places in Valencia.

A three-unit course will be offered to familiarize students with how entrepreneur agrifood companies operate in Spain and to provide how product performance is pursued through technical concepts of materials and relevant processes. Visits to various industries involve the use of unit operations and environmental conditions involved during the handling of food materials towards an end-product. The program encourages students to look for relationships of today’s agrifood field activities with some of the concepts covered in this course.  The main goal of the visit to Valencia is to bridge diversity across scales disciplines such as economic, technical, cultural and social aspects that lead the manufacturing field and readiness prior to an effective startup or own professional development. Ultimately, connecting-the-dots among the information that assists us to control behavior, to make predictions, to get involved in technology to manipulate systems for desired performance at various levels and stages, and equally important to compare and apply to the US practices. A central approach of this experience is the unconventional way of learning that will help the student to be creative, thinker, and learner of the know-how, or, just to wonder. In other words, consider the impact of all information to support your decision-making process as future professional.

This two-week international course in Valencia, Spain is designed to improve technical and intercultural skills. This is the first time this course is being proposed and offered.  The course will start on the 5th of May and will end on the 23rd of May 2024. The program will be M-F from 9:00 – 16:00 unless otherwise specified; lectures 9:00 – 10:30 followed by visits 11:00 – 13:30 to various field, industry and cultural sites; meals at 14:00. The program will take place at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV). The UPV ranks as the first technical university from Spain and it is among some of the best in the world. A visit to the outstanding research center the Instituto de Agroquímica y Tecnología de Alimentos (IATA) is intended.
