ANSC undergraduate, graduate students receive accolades at 2024 PSA Annual Meeting

Six graduate students and two undergraduate students from the Purdue Animal Sciences Department received awards and certificates at the 2024 Poultry Science Association (PSA) Annual Meeting in Louisville, Kentucky.

Four Purdue graduate students received awards out of the 22 awards available for graduate students: Melanie Bergman, Jenna Schober, Brittney Emmert and Yuechi Fu. Bergman and Schober are members of Gregory Fraley's lab group. Meanwhile, Emmert is a member of Darrin Karcher's lab, and Fu is a member of Kolapo Ajuwon and Layi Adeola's labs.

Additionally, two Purdue graduate students from the department won awards for their oral talk or poster presentation: Emmanuel Alagbe and Hayley Sutherland. Alagbe, a member of Adeola's lab, received an award for his poster titled, “Increasing digesta viscosity altered nutrient transporter gene expression and decreased nutrient utilization in Eimeria-challenged birds.” Sutherland, a member of Marisa Erasmus's lab group, received an award for her talk titled, “Bugging out: Northern fowl mite infestation levels and their relationship with cage-free laying hen welfare.”

Dylan Seets and Serena Wesley, two Purdue Animal Sciences undergraduate students, presented oral talks and earned certificates of participation. Seets is an undergraduate student member in Karcher's lab, and Wesley is a member of Fraley's lab.

Purdue had 35 unique authorship credits and 20 presentations, including two undergraduate students and eight faculty and staff talks during this annual meeting.

The PSA is a professional organization made up of educators, college students, researchers, producers and more that are part of the poultry industry.
