Contaminated foods are estimated to sicken 600 million people a year, contributing to malnutrition and stunting in children, increasing food insecurity, and creating barriers to entry into the global food trade. Risk-based approaches to food safety provide proactive, data-driven methods to prioritize the allocation of limited resources for food safety research, outreach, and policy. They help food safety authorities, private businesses, NGOs, and other stakeholders identify and address the greatest food safety risks to human health.

Please join the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Food Safety (FSIL) for two upcoming webinars on risk-based approaches to food safety. The first webinar (June 7) will provide an introduction and overview; the second (June 14) will feature researchers sharing their experience applying risk assessment to food safety challenges in Central America and Asia. FSIL Director and Purdue University Professor of Food Science Dr. Haley Oliver will moderate both webinars.

Speakers include:

  • Dr. Joanna Zablotsky Kufel (USDA)
  • Dr. Juliana Ruzante (RTI International)
  • Dr. Arie Havelaar (University of Florida)
  • Dr. Fernando Sampedro Parra (University of Minnesota)
  • Dr. Hung Nguyen-Viet (International Livestock Research Institute)
