Purdue food science professor Haley Oliver receives APLU teaching award

Haley Oliver, professor of food science at Purdue University, has been named a regional recipient of the Association of Public and Land Grant (APLU) 2022 Excellence in College and University Teaching Awards for Food and Agricultural Sciences.

The APLU program generates nominations from departments in agriculture, natural resources, veterinary science and human sciences. The nominees are evaluated on their ability as teachers, use of innovative teaching methodology, service to students and their profession and scholarship. The program annually names six regional and two early-career recipients.

Oliver’s regional award recognizes the quality of her recent achievements involving teaching philosophy, methodology and self-assessment.

Oliver has received multiple awards and acknowledgements during her career. She was named a 150thAnniversary Professor by the Office of the Provost in 2021. This honor recognizes Purdue faculty who were nominated as high-impact master teachers.

In 2018, Oliver was the first woman selected by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) to deliver the Justin Smith Morrill Lecture at the Association of Public Land-grant Universities Annual Meeting. She was chosen in recognition of her demonstrated leadership in education as well as her contributions to promoting excellence in the food and agricultural sciences.

“Teaching is a hallmark of the land-grant mission, and I am honored to be recognized by USDA, APLU and Purdue University for my commitment to impactful, inclusive education,” said Oliver.

The Future Food Safety Innovation Lab strives to leverage extensive experience in international food safety research, education, and extension to develop and manage a portfolio of food safety and capacity development projects.

Senay Simsek, department head of food science, praised Oliver’s commitment to teaching.

Dr. Oliver is one of the best teachers at Purdue University. Her dedication to student learning and development, combined with her other strengths, has led to her outstanding record of excellence in teaching and mentoring. Her impact extends beyond the classroom and lab. She is a teacher in the truest sense of the word.
