Downing Enjoys the Challenge of Sharing Natural Resources

Alunni: Adam Downing
Degree:
BS Forestry
Graduation: 1993
Business Title: Extension Agent, Natural Resources
Business: Virginia Cooperative Extension

I've been employed as a forestry and natural resources extension agent first with Penn State and now in Virginia with Virginia Tech. I've been in my current position since August, 2001.

As a Natural Resources Extension agent I provide expertise and leadership in developing, delivering and evaluating educational programs dealing with forests and forestry, and related natural resources to identified audiences. I enjoy wearing this "white hat" to make a positive difference in people's lives and simultaneously improve the environment through education.

My mission is, "to enable people to make best decisions regarding the forest & natural resources, within their realm of influence, resulting in environmentally sustainable management, growth, and quality of life for that person and that community. Fortunately, I've been able to develop strong partnerships with public and private sector professionals to help carry this out.

The undergraduate education afforded me at Purdue is another asset. Not only did it prepare me for pursuing a graduate degree from Penn State but I still benefit directly from my course work, contacts and experiences at Purdue.

Many students in my undergraduate class at Purdue, choose forestry or other natural resources fields in the hopes of not having to deal with people too much. Most of us have found this to be an unrealistic goal. Fortunately, I enjoy the challenge of working with people in the context of natural resources. It's rewarding to know I've helped people, help themselves.
