Spring 2019 Consumer Food Safety Education Conference

Dr. Feng, Weeraya Karnpanit (visiting scholar), Tressie Barrett, and Han Chen attended the Consumer Food Safety Education Conference (CFSEC) from March 6 through March 8, 2019. The focal points of this year’s CFSEC included promoting correct food handling behavior change among consumers, equipping conference attendees with tools to influence consumers’ food safety attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors, and providing resources to empower attendees to overcome challenges to the food safety programs they spearhead. During the conference, Dr. Feng delivered two oral presentations during the breakout sessions, and Tressie and Han delivered poster presentations.

The conference provided a great opportunity for our lab to share our work and afforded the students in our lab the opportunity to hone their presentation skills and gain deeper knowledge of the vast array of food safety applications in industry, academia, and government sectors through networking and attending presentations.

Han stated, “I learned a lot from communicating with people during the poster presentation and networking events. As an undergraduate, the presentations broadened my knowledge and allowed me to see the latest food safety directions.”

The conference prompted our lab to examine our work with a different perspective and inspired students to incorporate new ideas into their research and extension work. Tressie commented, “From the conference presentations, I gained insight into better ways to communicate food safety information to consumers that can motivate behavior change and improve general knowledge of food safety topics. I gained new ideas to make food safety education more interactive and stimulating for youth that can be modified to better serve the youth in my community.”
