FDA Advises Against Certain Imported Frozen Shrimp Due to Cesium Exposure

As of September 24, 2025, PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati has announced recalls of a variety of frozen shrimp products under four different firms. This recall is due to the fact that the product has been exposed to Cesium-137.

The affected products were sold under the firms of Southwind Foods LLC, Beaver Street Fisheries LLC, AquaStar (USA) Corp., and Lawrence Wholesale LLC. These products were sold nationwide, primarily as either peeled shrimp, cocktail shrimp, or breaded shrimp.

Cesium-137 would not be considered an acute hazard at the levels present in the shrimp. However, long term repeated low dose exposure, such as contaminated food and beverage over time, results in an elevated risk of cancer.

Consumers who may have purchased one of the affected products, dispose of the product and do not consume it. Consumers who suspect exposure to elevated levels of cesium should discuss their concerns with their healthcare provider.
