Machines and Robotics

John Evans, assistant professor of agricultural and biological engineering, and David Cappelleri, associate professor of mechanical engineering, at Purdue University, presented as part of the Data Driven Agriculture webinar series.

Cappelleri discussed the new NSF Engineering Research Center on the Internet of Things for Precision Agriculture (IoT4Ag).  IoT4Ag researchers will work in three interconnected projects: sensing, communication/energy and response. Tiny, plantable sensors will need to send data to robots and other farm equipment, all of which will also need to be able to talk to the cloud. Finally, all of this data must be integrated with that from the wider internet, and be fed back to farmers so they can make better decisions.

Evans discussed his work on the Auto-Unload project that was a collaboration between Purdue and John Deere. The project focused on the development of an autonomous unloading strategy for grain transfer between a combine and grain cart. He will discuss the data pipeline required between the connected machines to facilitate a successful unload.

Weekly Webinar Series

This weekly webinar series featuring experts in data science and digital agriculture at Purdue University kicked off on Feb. 4 and concluded on May 13. The Data Driven Agriculture webinars explored ways digital agriculture and data science can impact agriculture today and into the future. See the full playlist of past webinars on Purdue Ag’s YouTube Channel.

This series was hosted by Purdue College of Agriculture and supported in part by the Wabash Heartland Innovation Network (WHIN).
