“Working with the Purdue Student Farm team has been a delight,” says Pamela Sari, director of the Asian American and Asian Resource and Cultural Center. “They not only share their skills in small farm experience but also share energy that empowers students, faculty and staff to bring the wholeness of our identities into garden planning and implementation, as well as encourage us to do so with community building and impact as a goal.”
Since 2020, the Boilermaker Vegetable Season Pass has provided an educational experience for students as well as fresh vegetables and herbs to local community members. The “seed to sales” structure starts in the classroom. Purdue students have the opportunity to take Small Farm Experience courses (SFS 210 and SFS 211) to gain hands-on, practical experience in all aspects of vegetable and herb production. Students learn about seeding, transplant production, bed preparation, planting, irrigating, weeding, harvesting, and since 2020, marketing and sales. The farm is also the outdoor lab for the sustainable food and farming systems major.
“At the student farm, it is all about food,” says Petrus Langenhoven, director of the Purdue Student Farm and clinical assistant professor in the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture. “We aim to create an environment that educates and stimulates hardworking, creative minds in sustainable local food production and marketing. It’s always gratifying seeing the progress students make while working at the farm while enjoying the fruits of their labor.”
