Lessons Learned from Technology Adoption: Moving into the Digital Age of Farming

As part of the Open Ag Technology and Systems Center outreach and education, a few faculty, staff, and students gave presentations to the AgGateway community.  AgGateway is a global, non-profit organization whose members develop standards and other resources so that companies can rapidly access information. This leads to cost savings, improved inventory management and traceability, interoperability in field operations, and data leverage for sustainability and profitability. The OATS Center, with AgGateway collaboration, shared insights and approaches regarding digital connectivity and seamless information exchange.

Tech Adoption: In this YouTube video, Dr. Bruce Erickson, e-Learning director for Purdue Agronomy, covers “Lessons learned from technology adoption – moving into the digital age of farming”. You’ll learn what technologies are being adopted and why. Bruce covers some of the interesting aspects of history, but quickly gets to current state of technology and nicely sorts some of those technologies into “data driven” and “automation”. You will gain insights regarding the links of the technology to the biology.

Dr. Erickson builds on his experience with the Crop Life survey regarding technology adoption, and offers insights regarding behavior of farmers, dealers, and technology suppliers. He points out some challenges for a truly data-driven future that puts some of our decimal points into perspective. He also addresses the skills in the workforce and how education and training may be changing. He closes with some headlines for the year and points us all to some good resources.
