Primer on Rural Wireless Communications

As part of the Open Ag Technology and Systems Center outreach and education, a few faculty, staff, and students gave presentations to the AgGateway community.  AgGateway is a global, non-profit organization whose members develop standards and other resources so that companies can rapidly access information. This leads to cost savings, improved inventory management and traceability, interoperability in field operations, and data leverage for sustainability and profitability. The OATS Center, with AgGateway collaboration, shared insights and approaches regarding digital connectivity and seamless information exchange.

Wireless Technologies: In this YouTube video, Yang Wang, a Ph.D. candidate in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Purdue University, gives a “Primer on rural wireless communications”. You will quickly get beyond the buzzwords and terminology to gain an understanding of the technology we now or soon will rely upon for data, voice, and video transmission regardless of where we live, work, or play.

Yang includes some very realistic examples of data needs and device performance specifications. Learn how to navigate specifications to choose a data pathway that will work.  You’ll learn some of the interplay between power, sensitivity, range, data rate, and topography.
