AFA Crop Science Institute Empowers Future Ag Leaders
Eight Department of Agricultural Economics students traveled to the Ag Future of America (AFA) Crop Science Institute July 21 – 23 in St. Louis, MO. During the 3-day conference, the students interacted with industry during networking sessions, listened to keynote speakers regarding the state of the industry, asked questions during an executive panel discussion, and participated in roundtable discussions. Sophomore Berenize DelReal Perez (Agribusiness; Goodland, IN) stated, "AFA was a life-changing experience; I got to meet so many people from all over the United States. My favorite part was the sponsor breakfast on the last day of the conference. I really enjoyed being able to have conversations with them on a more personal level."
Along with other participants, they were split into four tour groups and spent a day visiting a vast array of facilities. These facilities included ADM, Bayer, BASF, Bunge, Corteva, Growmark and Syngenta. Junior Nathan Thompson (Agribusiness; Francesville, IN) shared, "I really enjoyed AFA Crop Science Institute and all AFA experiences because of the fantastic opportunity to meet new people in the same industry as you from all over the United States. It was great getting an inside look at Ag facilities in different regions, and I believe the perspective and connections I get from these conferences will help me tremendously in the future. Agriculture is such an interwoven industry, and connections made today will be impactful for a lifetime."
Senior Shay Doerstler (Agribusiness; Good Forks, IN) summarized, "The AFA Crop Science Institute was a valuable opportunity for me to build on the knowledge gained during my summer internship and engage in discussion on pressing topics with industry professionals."
