Taking A (Spring) Break In Portugal’s Rich Agricultural Landscape
Thirteen Boilermakers spent Spring Break 2025 in Portugal as part of the “Agriculture in Portugal” study abroad program led by Dr. Mark Russell and Brenda Schroeder. The highlights of the trip included the Medieval Village of Monsaraz, Torre de Frade (wine and cattle production), Herdade da Marotiera (wine and cork production), Quinta da Pisao Farm and Quinta do Paral with their Wine Hotel.
Junior Madison Haynes (Agribusiness; Butler, IN) described her favorite destinations, “At the medieval village, we were able to explore the village and the countryside, as well as do some shopping. At the winery, we got a tour of the vineyard and enjoyed a wine tasting in the aging cellar. At the farm, we were able to walk around and learn about composting and organic farming. And on the way home that day, we were able to stop by the ocean to take some pictures!”
Junior Ashlee Lindley (Agribusiness; Young America, IN) shared, “This was my first time traveling outside the country, and I would say it was an amazing experience. Everything from the new surroundings to the culture and people was exciting and eye-opening.” She added, “One of my favorite aspects of this trip was trying new foods and pushing myself outside of my comfort zone when it came to culinary experiences. I had the chance to taste dishes I had never encountered before, and it broadened my appreciation for different cuisines.”
Having spent Spring Break 2023 on a German study abroad program, Jaydon Kauffman (Agricultural Economics; Battle Ground, IN) decided to wrap up his senior year with another study abroad adventure! He stated, “I chose to study abroad in Portugal because of its innovative and sustainable approach to agriculture. Portugal has a diverse agricultural landscape, from vineyards and olive groves to modern agricultural initiatives. I wanted to gain a global perspective on agriculture, and Portugal offered a balance of hands-on experience, academic learning and cultural immersion that I knew would help me grow both personally and professionally.”
Kauffman summarized the trip, “From exploring the cities to hunting down our next adventure, there was never a dull moment with this group. It is hard to narrow down my favorite memory from the trip, as each day brought new excitement, laughter and unforgettable experiences. Whether we were getting lost in the winding streets, trying local restaurants, or simply sharing stories late into the night, every moment felt special because of the people we were with.”
