Spring Break on the Emerald Isle

Emma Hughes (Junior, Agribusiness; Morristown, NJ) traveled with the John Martinson Honors College on their “The Emerald Isle: Knowledge, Culture, and Identity in Ireland” program during Spring Break 2026! She loves to travel, and Ireland was her 15th country to visit. Emma chose this particular program because of her family connection to Ireland and a desire to learn about the culture.

The top highlights of the trip for Emma included a hurling experience in Kilkenny, the beauty of the Dingle Peninsula and visiting the Galway City Market. She shared, “We learned the basics of the traditional Irish sport from a local who has played his entire life. It was, in his words, ‘a good craic,’ and such a fun, authentic introduction to Irish culture. The Dingle Peninsula is located in the Gaeltacht region, where Irish is still widely spoken. It was an incredible opportunity to see how native languages continue to exist in such an English-centric world. I loved being able to talk with local vendors at the Galway City Market and take my time exploring the handmade goods. It was such a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere.”
