Hayvn Meihls (Senior, Agribusiness; West Point, IN) and Kelby Roberts (Junior, Agricultural Economics; Falmouth, IN) spent the majority of their 2025-26 Winter Break traveling across Peru. They earned three credits in the International Engagement in Agriculture Study Abroad Program led by Dr. Jeneen Fields and Dr. Mark Russell. They explored the cities of Lima, Cusco, Ollantaytambo, Allas, Aguas Calientes, San Jeronimo and Miraflores from December 27, 2025, to January 7, 2026.

Meihls shared, “Going on the winter study abroad trip to Peru was one of the best decisions I’ve made. I never imagined I would get to see Machu Picchu, experience the jungle and learn about agriculture in such a different environment. Visiting El Mangal was a highlight — harvesting mangos, cacao and coffee beans while learning directly from local farmers made the experience feel real and meaningful. This trip pushed me outside my comfort zone, helped me grow both personally and professionally, and is something I will carry with me for a lifetime.”

Roberts added, “Studying abroad in Peru expanded my understanding of global food production and accessibility in ways I did not anticipate. Observing local markets and traditional farming practices challenged assumptions I held about regulation, efficiency and what “quality” looks like in a food system. I was especially struck by how fewer cosmetic standards for produce allowed more food to reach consumers rather than be discarded for appearance alone. The experience strengthened my academic interest in food insecurity and reinforced the importance of approaching agricultural policy with cultural awareness, humility and a deep understanding of how local systems function.”
